This is a glossary of various drummer terminology, seen in varying levels of usage among drummers. Since slang and acronyms are always being invented, along with new inventions/ideas, this list will never be truly complete.


  • Accent - Emphasis placed on a note that it gives it more attack, volume, and stress. Shown as a greater than sign or a sideways "v" over a note.


  • Backbeat - A beat that places accents, usually on the snare drum, on beats 2 and 4.
  • Bass drum - The lowest pitched drum on a drumkit, usually operated by a foot pedal.
